Turners Falls - 1830

These 2 maps, both dated 1830, show the Turners falls area when it was open and undeveloped. Most of the land area on this map is completely built up now. The first map, from the Massachusetts Archives, shows one road looping up from the southwest (from Greenfield), passing the old sawmill site at the head of the barge canal (the wider line on the left), and then heading south past the old ferry crossing (now Unity Park).  Barton Cove did not exist then, as the modern high dam was not yet built.
Another 1830 map shows that the great Turners Falls waterfall was then called "Millers Lower Falls". (North is to the left on this map...the small river entering on the left is Fall River.)

This map is a little more accurate than the other map, being based on a survey by the Army Corps of Engineers.  The survey was done because there were plans to build a wide, more modern canal bypassing the falls. Those plans never came to reality.
