What's Different than the 1850s Maps
1860       Walling State Map

The 1860 map shows all the roads in Vermont, and a few more details for each town. Major geographic features are labeled, as are a few historical sites - notably Revolutionary War sites. Each town's charter date, settlement date, and current population appears on the map.
The names of the original map's subscribers - those who pre-paid for copies of the large wall map - are printed on a numbered list keyed to the house locations.
The author of the 1860 state map, Henry F. Walling, was also the publisher of eight of Vermont's county maps.  Between 1857 and 1859, Walling's surveyors did the actual mapping of roads for the eight counties. The county maps are also quite large (typically 5' x 5'), which allows them to show even more detail than the state map.
Walling used his eight maps and three county maps by competing map-makers to make this first complete road map of Vermont.
