A new book of historical maps of Brattleboro will be published
December 10, according to publisher David Allen of West
Chesterfield, NH. Dozens of old maps of Brattleboro are contained
in the 76-page book, which includes an historical narrative. Maps
range in date from 1745 to 1912, and include the earliest colonial
boundary maps, detailed home ownership maps of the late 1800s, and
such unusual maps as three birds-eye lithographs of Brattleboro. Allen
does his own map research, combing through public and private
records to find interesting historic maps. Sources include
published maps from the 1800s, State Archives and Historical
Societies in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, the
Brattleboro Historical Society, Historic Deerfield Library,
Dartmouth College Library, and the Library of Congress. Some of
the maps are reprints of commercial maps from the 1800s, notably
the detailed maps with the actual names of property owners.
"People love looking at the old maps – especially the ones which
show who owned their house – or the old schoolhouse – back in
1856, for example", said Allen.
Allen owns a land surveying and mapping company in Greenfield,
Massachusetts. "we often use the old maps to help us decipher old
deeds and land boundaries" he said.
The 76 page softcover book is titled "Early Maps of
Brattleboro, 1745-1912". It is being published with an optional
CDROM containing color image files which can be printed with home
computers, and has complete copies of the oversize maps which are
printed as excerpts in the book version. The price is $17.95
($29.95 with CDROM). A pre-publication discount is offered to
those who want to order in advance: $13.95 ($24.95 with CD).
Advance orders must be paid by check mailed to Old Maps/ PO Box 54
West Chesterfield, NH 03466. Those ordering in advance will pick
