The Wilder Building on the Old Maps
One downtown building through the years - on old maps
Excerpts from several of the maps in "Early Maps of Brattleboro" (and a few not in the book) which document the changing uses of the site of this old brick building. These maps show the site before the Wilder Building was begun (1875) and end with a 1924 map.

The Wilder Building - a circa 1914 Photo.
A fire in early December, 2004 seriously damaged the top floors of this historic building. (Photo from the Brattleboro Reformer news article of Dec 11, 2004.  This story has a nice summary of the building's history)

Construction of the present building started in 1875. This view, from the 1876 birds-eye view, shows a flat roofed 3-story building on the site of the Wilder Building (middle of map - on north bank of Whetstone Brook). Is this the Wilder building, or its predecessor?  While dated 1876, the Bailey & Hazen view may have been drawn a year earlier.  North is at the right side of this view.
