The 1869 map shows the second and third Estey factory sites. A fire in 1857 burned the
old Estey building on Whetstone Brook, and Jacob rebuilt across the street at the
site here labeled "Melodeon Manufy". This was a
steam-powered mill. Canal Street/Bridge Street
is a bit indistinct in the lower middle of the map. Main Street
extending north-south. Flat Street arcs off to the upper left.
It looks as though another Estey-owned facility existed at
the old factory site on the brook - notice the 2 buildings
labeled "Planing Mill" and "J.E. & Co."
The larger section of the 1869 map, below, shows the third
Estey Factory off Flat Street, to the west, and upstream from
the downtown sites. This plant was built in 1866.
Three years later, however (at the time of this map) a serious
flood damaged part of the site, and plans were made for another
move - to the high and dry Birge Street site. |
