The 1775 map was made (above) from a much larger map of the seacoast by Charles Blaskowitz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The close-up from 1913 map (at top of this page) shows that Eldridge decorated his map with sailing ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above is an unusual nautical chart of the Vineyard \u2013 showing ice formations in 1874<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The above 1858 map of Martha\u2019s Vineyard shows all the Towns highlighted and, most importantly, shows all the roads and the house locations \u2013 with owner names! \u2013 throughout the island. This is an extract from the huge wall map of Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket County by HF Walling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have three \u201cbird\u2019s eye\u201d views of places on Martha\u2019s Vineyard, Edgartown, Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs. Bird\u2019s eye views are amazingly detailed drawings that show every street and building in a village or city. (see below)
A good birds-eye, like the Edgartown one, will show the actual windows in each building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The view above is Edgartown Village in 2001 \u2013 horizontal view. It is interesting to see the sand patterns in the water just off the shoreline. We also have a closer view of Edgartown (below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have two development maps for Oak Bluffs in the late 1800s. The first, dated 1871 ,(below) is decorated with pictures of buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This house on the left side of the map may be a design published for potential buyers. I wonder if such a house exists in Oak Bluffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martha\u2019s Vineyard also appears on larger area maps of the seacoast such as those covering the areas called \u201cVineyard Sound\u201d and \u201cNantucket Shoals\u201d. Below are a few of our prints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The (above) print 1857 nautical chart excerpt (Taken from a larger map) map has some nice colors, though it has some discoloration from years of use (of the original).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1881 map above shows the triangulation lines used to accurately survey the seacoast and the islands. Surveyors measure the exact bearing to the same point from two or more different locations to get a very good \u201cfix\u201d on a church steeple or other point they could see from miles away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Des Barres map of 1779 is amazingly accurate for its antiquity. This shows the islands as well as the seacoast from Narragansett Bay to Cape Cod.
