He was a seasoned military man, having served in the War of 1812 and other campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;The 1839 &#8220;Seat of War of Florida&#8221; map &nbsp; shows numerous battle sites, military roads, forts and other military features.<\/p>\n<p>It was a well-drawn map and is quite attractive.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dade&#8217;s Massacre of 1835, a famous battle in Florida&#8217;s history is here shown as &#8220;Dade&#8217;s Battle 28 Dec 1835.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.old-maps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Florida_1839_Taylor_Clip_Blog_Dades.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-624 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.old-maps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Florida_1839_Taylor_Clip_Blog_Dades-769x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"617\" height=\"865\"><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.old-maps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Florida_1839_Taylor_Clip_Blog_BattleSite.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-622\" src=\"http:\/\/www.old-maps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Florida_1839_Taylor_Clip_Blog_BattleSite-300x288.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"330\"><\/a><br \/>\nThe Battle of Okeechobee and routes leading to that site are indicated. The mapmaker tells us that &#8220;O-Kee-Cho-Bee&#8221; means &#8220;Big Water&#8221;. It was a published by the Army Topographical Engineers.<\/p>\n<p>General Taylor was not the draftsman, he was the commander who ordered that the map be made.&nbsp; He was not bashful about that map-making decision.<\/p>\n<p>Ten years later, after his notable service in the Mexican War, he was elected as President of the United States, becoming the first president elected without holding prior political office.&nbsp;
