"New" Old Maps of Vermont 2014

In 2014 we added 15 new maps to our "Old Vermont State Maps" collection at old-maps.com. These reproductions are available for free on-line viewing and as prints for sale. They include the 1842 Zadock Thompson map of Vermont, the first to show the modern spelling of "Camels Hump" mountain. All maps made before this, like the 1789 Blodget map, called the mountain "Camels Rump.

We have added several colonial maps including the 1768 "Jefferys" map which shows all the New Hamspshire land grants in Vermont, and the competing New York map made by Sauthier (1779) which shows New York townships mostly in western Vermont. There was no Vermont in 1779 - this area was legally part of New York State, and land titles were a confusing mess.

The 1839 "Burr" postal routes map - an official map commissioned by Congress - is valuable for showing us which were the best roads and the main villages in the state.

And we also have several small maps chosen for beauty like the 1816 Bringhurst manuscript with its charming depictions of the principal settlements, and the Goodrich and Finley maps, both made in 1831.
