The original map is a very large document,
measuring about 5' x 5'. This CD makes it easy to use this
remarkable document. |
The first complete road map of Massachusetts on a CDROM.
The Walling state map is a a stunningly detailed map. The
map purports to show every road in the state, and, most
interestingly, shows every building outside of the cities with a
small dot. The Walling map was based on the series of
county maps that Walling produced in the decade before he issued
this wall map..
This is a very valuable document of
Massachusetts history which has not been easily available to
study until this publication.
This reproduction is a PDF
file with bookmarks leading to county portions of the main map. |
|
Our CD has the entire image of the 5' x 5' wall map, and
includes "Bookmarks" which allow readers to find their section
(by county) easily. |

The Walling map shows all every road in the state and the
location of every house and business (except in cities). The
house locations were taken from the
detailed county maps that Walling made in the 1850s. Walling
was a serious mapmaker and engineer, so it may be that there are
houses shown here that are not on the earlier county maps.
This segment shows the village of Heath Centre. A few
buildings are identified, such as schoolhouses (S.H.).
Our scan of the original map, from the Rumsey Collection, was
done at 150 dpi, so the map appears a bit blurry when you zoom
in close. All words are legible. |
