
Maine Village maps from 1850s -as prints
368 village maps now available !


368 village maps – many of them the first ever made – appear in the margins of the 15 Maine county wall maps of 1856 – 1860.
We have “chopped up” all the wall maps to make 368 village maps like this example.
The special appeal is the names and locations of home and business sites.
For example, There are 30 village detail maps (and 11 pictures) on the Waldo County map.

The Rockport Village map measures about 8×11 (after we added the margins).
The added Business Directory increased the appeal of the wall map in 1859 and is fun to read today

It is assumed that these men paid to have their names printed on the map in 1859.

This 1859 map of Rockport village may be the oldest to label houses and businesses in that village.
(For smaller villages like Brooks – above – the 1850s maps were the first. ) Larger villages like Rockport may have been mapped before this wall map..

Note that the lettering is a bit fuzzy on this closeup.
The Rockport Village map (unlike Brooks Village above) has tiny lettering, and this is the best image we have of it.
All names are legible.
